Business Class, Media
Center, and Gaming
System are just a few of the names advertisers apply to the plethora of
laptop types available on the market today. Deciding which laptop is right
for which purpose however has more to do with the category in which each
belongs, and less to do with how fancy the machine may look. Knowing the
different laptop categories and how they impact what the owner gets overall
is critical in ensuring the right machine is purchased.
The 5 Laptop Categories
Presently, all currently available portable computers, regardless of brand,
fall into one of five categories.
Commonly known as ‘netbooks’, are
designed for travel. Typically weighing under 4lbs (less than 1.8kg), their compact design allows for transportation
in a small bag. Meant primarily to be easily portable, laptops within this
category are not designed for high demand applications or games.

They typically do not have a CD/DVD optical drive (though some do) but will
have high resolution screens 13”
and smaller. Their smaller keyboards present issues to those with larger
hands and fingers however the sleek and small design make them perfect for
short-term use when carrying a standard laptop is not required.
Thin & Light Laptops
This class of laptop fits snugly between ultraportable
and standard varieties. Designed to be capable of handling light to medium
workloads, these laptops easily handle Word and Excel files as well as
surfing the net. Weighing in at 4-6lbs,
the thin and light laptop offers better processor performance, a larger
screen and longer battery life than the ultraportable,
but may or may not include an optical drive. This class of laptop is good for
those looking for increased mobility over a standard laptop.
Standard Laptops
The standard laptop measures a minimum of 11” across, which is required to support a full
sized QWERTY keyboard layout. This class of laptop continues to presently
remain the most common laptop available at most electronic retail stores as
it predates both the ‘ultraportable’ and ‘thin &
light’ categories. Weighing in at 6-8lbs, the standard laptop typically includes an
optical drive as well as an abundance of media and communication ports. The
standard laptop is designed as a general use machine and commonly suits the
needs of most from student to business person.
These laptops were quite literally meant to replace a desktop
computer; both in power and ability. Desktop Replacement laptops are perfect
for gaming and business applications and are commonly referred to as
‘business class’ or ‘gaming laptops’. Weighing in at 8lbs and up, this category
of machines is not conveniently portable, but certainly more so than lugging
around a desktop. Wider screens, beefy CPUs and video chips, enhanced audio
speaker systems and better components in general mean these laptops can
perform at about 90% of its desktop counterpart. These advantages however
also mean they are less portable and typically have the least amount of
battery life, but also have the longest lifespan.
Tablets
Tablet computers literally look like just a laptop screen. Capable of
displaying in both portrait and landscape view
(usually changed by tilting), tablets make use of touch screen technology and
may include a stylus.
Larger versions of the tablet may include a rotating and/or removable
keyboard but generally these machines weigh in at 2-4lbs making them extremely attractive to
industries requiring the larger screen to lighter weight. These PCs are not
meant for gaming or heavy business applications and do not include optical
drives but generally have the longest battery life.
As advancement in technology continues, additional categories
of portable computers may very well be included. There’s no denying that as
of today, many smart phones are clearly approaching the power and abilities
of ultraportable laptops.
However, knowing the differences of each category as well as
the advantages and disadvantages of each allows for more knowledgeable
purchasing. Keep in mind that a computer is only as good as what the user
needs it for; understanding this will point them in the right direction.
Sales pitches aside, all the bells and whistles in the world will not change
the fact that if a pc cannot do what the user requires, it’s worthless.
